ARAB — No. 9 Albertville edged No. 6 Arab 2-1 in Class 5A, Section 6, boys soccer action Monday night.

“It was our first section game on the coldest night of the season thus far,” said AHS head coach Matt West. “Neither team could win the match.”

Orlando Argote scored for the Aggies in the first half, making it 1-0.

Arab was awarded a penalty kick late in the first half and knotted the match 1-1.

Each team had chances to win in regulation, but neither could net a goal.

Both overtime periods finished scoreless, so the game progressed to kicks from the mark.

Gelver Bartolon, Andres Francisco and Victor Franco made their kicks.

Arab’s final kicker had a chance to win it for the Knights, but goalkeeper Jose Vasquez made his second save in the penalty kick phase to force sudden death kicks.

Antonio Soriano nailed his kick for the Aggies. Arab kicked last so it had a chance to tie and send it to the next kicker.

The sixth kicker for the Knights missed high, giving the Aggies the victory.

“We are 1-0 in games that count, and we are looking forward to hosting (No. 1) John Carroll on Thursday,” West said.

“All in all we played pretty well tonight, but we still haven’t found our best game. We will need it Thursday to hang with JC.”
