No. 8 Aggies down Crossville

Published February 26, 2009

Class 5A, No. 8 Albertville defeated Crossville 5-1 in varsity boys soccer action Tuesday at McCord Field at Aggie Stadium.

Antonio Soriano’s corner kick gave Albertville a 1-0 advantage.

Later in the first half, Crossville’s keeper, Cesar Rosales, made a good save, but the ball ended up on the foot of Jesus Galacia, who put it back into an empty net for a 2-0 Aggie lead.

In the second half, Crossville cut Albertville’s margin to 2-1.

The Lions crossed a ball into the box, and several Aggie defenders banged the ball around, with the last bounce finding the net for CHS.

Shortly after the Lions’ goal, Galacia took an Orlando Argote corner kick from the air and made a beautiful shot to the back corner, freezing the Lion goalie, who could only watch as the ball floated over him.

Soriano scored his second goal of the night on a corner kick deflection, shooting it back into a crowd of people who weren’t able to stop the ball from finding the net.

Johan Betelius added the fifth Aggie goal late in the match.

“I know Crossville has waited a long time to put a team together, and I am very happy for them and the school that they were able to do so,” said Aggie head coach Matt West.

“They played hard to the last whistle, and they have nothing but respect from the Albertville team and staff.

“We wish them the very best on their first season and look forward to good matches with them in the future.”

The Aggies are 4-2.

Cullman 2, Albertville 0: The Aggies fell at fourth-ranked Cullman on Monday.

The Bearcats led 1-0 at the break. Cullman scored 10 minutes into the second half on a hard shot from the right side the Aggie keeper misplayed.

The Aggies found themselves playing with 10 players for the last 25 minutes of regulation, as Argote received a straight red card from the center official.

Despite the setback, Albertville was able to mount several chances at the Cullman net. The bar rejected a great shot from Galacia.

“The ball just didn’t find the net for us,” West said. “We played very hard and never gave up, even when we went down a player.

“Despite the score, that was the best game we put together all season.”

Albertville 3, Lee-Huntsville 0: The Aggies toppled Lee-Huntsville on Friday.

Julian Lohnertz, Argote and Andres Francisco netted goals for Albertville.

Junior varsity goalie Zach West started his first varsity match and posted the shutout.

“Our defense played really well, and the goalie didn’t have to make too many saves,” said Aggie head coach Matt West.

Albertville 2, East Limestone 1: The Aggies downed No. 10 East Limestone on Feb. 19.

Galacia and Argote each netted a goal for Albertville.

East Limestone scored a late goal to avoid the shutout.

Albertville 4, Collinsville 2: Galacia scored two goals and both Argote and Jorge Rodriguez one in the Aggie victory.

“We got up 4-0, and we made sure everyone got plenty of minutes,” Matt West said.

Hartselle 3, Albertville 2: The Aggies fell in their season opener Feb. 9, which was also their first match on McCord Field at Aggie Stadium.

Galacia scored both goals for AHS.

“We got down 3-0 and then scored two late with a chance to tie going just wide of the posts,” West said.

JV Aggies are 3-0

The Albertville junior varsity boys are off to a 3-0 start, outscoring their opponents 9-1.

The Aggies defeated Hartselle 3-0, Athens 3-0 and Collinsville 3-1.

Roberto Garcia leads the team in scoring and assists. Defensively, Miguel Lopez, Luke Compton, Daniel Garcia, and Daniel Gomez have the Aggies playing well.

Sean Beardsley and Juan Gutierrez are anchoring the midfield for AHS.
